FACILITIES

The School of Management Campus and Resources The Doctoral Program in Management is housed in the School of Management (SOM) building complex, within the social science area of Yale University. Designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, the complex includes four restored nineteenth-century landmark houses, linked with buildings of more recent vintage. It preserves the informality and character of the historic houses, while offering modern teaching and research facilities. Doctoral students in management share offices located in the main complex. Donaldson Commons, the school's dinning hall, is directly across from the School and is a popular gathering place for students and faculty in the social sciences.

The Yale University library system has over ten million volumes housed in a number of fine libraries, including the Social Science Library located across the street from the SOM complex. The Social Science Library contains over 80,000 volumes and houses collections in administrative sciences, economics, human behavior, organization and management, political science, and sociology.

The Information Technology group at the School runs several NT and Unix-based servers to support the computing needs of over 700 users. Some of the services provided by the IT group are: computer labs, remote dial-in access, Internet access and the world wide web, electronic mail, network connections and locations, Information Technology Technical Library, video conferencing center, Unix accounts and personal home servers for research purposes. There are a number of statistical and mathematical software packages available on the Unix systems (e.g., Gauss, Mathematica, SPSS, SAS, and S-Plus). In addition, several research databases are purchased by the Information Technology group for use at the School and throughout the University. The IT group also maintains a research laboratory for experimental work with 44 networked computers and a server.

Yale and New Haven
Yale University, founded in 1701, has an enrollment of over 11,000 – equally composed of undergraduate and graduate students. The campus is located near downtown New Haven, Connecticut, a New England city with a population of 132,000, situated on Long Island Sound.

The Connecticut countryside and the New Haven harbor and public beaches are easily accessible from the city. Hiking, bicycling, and sailing, as well as skiing, are popular recreations.

New Haven is 75 miles from New York City and 135 miles from Boston via the interstate highway system. Amtrak regularly services New Haven and several major airlines fly into Tweed-New Haven Airport. Private limousine service connecting New Haven with the major New York and Hartford airports is also available.

Housing
The University has a limited amount of dormitory space for single students as well as some apartments for married students. Most graduate students live in the city's residential neighborhoods, in the inland suburbs, or along the shore.

Health
The University Health Services Center, located on Hillhouse Avenue one block from the School of Management, provides students with a comprehensive health plan. Students may enroll their spouses and dependent children in the plan by completing an application form and paying a separate fee.

The Arts and Recreation
New Haven and Yale offer exceptional opportunities for theater and music, including the Yale Repertory, Long Warf, Shubert, and Palace theaters. The Yale School of Music and the New Haven Symphony give numerous concerts every year, and visiting orchestras and ensembles often give concerts in Yale's Woolsey Hall. Yale institutions offering special programs and facilities built around their collections include the Yale Art Gallery, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the center for British Art and British Studies, and the Peabody Museum of Natural History.

The facilities of Payne Whitney Gymnasium are available to students in all professional and graduate schools. The gym contains two pools, three jogging tracks, three rowing tanks, 40 squash and handball-racquetball courts, plus rooms for dancing, fencing, gymnastics, exercise, judo, golf, volleyball, and basketball. The gym offers free instruction in regularly scheduled classes. Ingalls Rink, Cullman indoor tennis courts, and the Yale golf course are open to students for modest fees. Other University opportunities include the 2,000-acre Yale Outdoor Education Center, 42 miles from New Haven, and the Yale Sailing Center on Long Island Sound.
