Student Track Record
The PhD program in marketing at Yale is relatively new and therefore has a fairly short track record. However,
the quality of the initial placements and the research records of these students have been impressive.

Sridhar Balasubramanian, the first graduate from the Ph.D.
program, accepted an offer from the University of Texas at Austin.
His dissertation paper titled "Mail versus Mall: A Strategic
Analysis of Competition between Direct Marketers and Conventional
Retailers" won the prestigious John D.C. Little Award for the
Best Marketing Paper published in Marketing Science or Management
Science in 1998. Sridhar also published a coauthored paper in
Marketing Science with Professors Subrata Sen, Edward Kaplan
and William Putsis (then at Yale) as a doctoral student. He was
recently awarded a $500,000 grant from the NSF to support his research
on Virtual Investor Communities on the Internet. He is currently
a tenured Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill.
Thomas Steenburgh, joined the Harvard Business School
in 2003. Apart from his dissertation research, Tom published a paper
in Marketing Science, when he was in the Marketing PhD program.
Uzma Khan, joined Carnegie Mellon University's
(CMU) Tepper School of Business in 2005. Uzma won the AMA's
John A. Howard Doctoral Dissertation award for 2005.
Jackie Luan, who was on the job market this year
(Fall 2005) was very well received on the market. She will be joining
Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business starting Fall
2006.
We believe that the breadth and depth of the research training
offered at Yale coupled with the close research interactions our
students have with the faculty during their doctoral studies is
an excellent recipe for the continued and consistent successes of
our doctoral students in the academic job market.
